Fees
Skin cancer-related fees, including consultations, biopsies, and excisions, are set as private fees in line with Australian Medical Association (AMA) recommended guidelines. These reflect the high-quality care, advanced technology, and specialized services provided at Queensland Skin Cancer Clinic.
We are a private billing clinic. Out-of-pocket gaps apply to most patients after Medicare rebates. We follow best practice guidelines (Australian Medical Association and Medical Board of Australia) to provide clear cost information. Your doctor will discuss:
- Likely procedure type and Medicare item number
- Private fee
- Expected Medicare rebate
- Your out-of-pocket gap before any treatment starts. This ensures you can make a fully informed decision with no unexpected costs. Feel free to ask questions at any time!

Biopsies
Most of our diagnostic skin biopsies are simple procedures (e.g., shave or punch biopsies under MBS item 30071) that do not require suturing or suture removal. Fees for these are calculated according to the number of lesions as shown in the table below. Your specimen will be sent to our expert skin pathology clinic for microscopic examination.
| Number of lesions | Private fee | Medicare rebate | Gap payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lesion | $130 | $51.85 | $78.15 |
| 2 lesions | $195 | $77.70 | $117.30 |
Note: Some biopsies or lesion removals require full-thickness excision with suturing (e.g., when clinically suspicious for melanoma or deeper lesions). These attract a higher private fee due to added complexity, repair, and aftercare. Fees, Medicare item numbers, rebates, and out-of-pocket gaps for such procedures will be discussed with your doctor before proceeding to ensure full informed financial consent.

Surgical Procedures
Procedures such as cryotherapy, curettage, or skin lesion biopsies/excisions that require suturing attract a higher fee than the standard biopsy rates listed above. Fees for these procedures are different due to the added complexity, repair involved, and aftercare (such as suture removal).
The Medicare fee schedule is complex, and we are unable to include all possible item numbers and variations here. Specific Medicare item numbers, exact fees, expected rebates, and out-of-pocket gaps to be discussed with your doctor before the procedure proceeds.
Please ask our doctor or staff about your individualized procedure and related fees during your consultation – we want to ensure you have full informed financial consent and no surprises.
You will normally be asked to pay the full amount of the procedure, and we will arrange where possible for your Medicare rebate to be lodged electronically using Tyro system and you will received the rebate instantly. Ask our staff about your individualised procedure and related fees.
Medicare Rebate
Medicare Easyclaim is available for eligible services. Your Medicare Rebate can be paid back to your debit card immediately after you have paid your account.
Bulk Billing (Limited Eligibility)
Queensland Skin Cancer Clinic is a private billing practice. We aim to make essential skin cancer care accessible. Bulk billing is available only in specific cases to support accessible care.
- Gold DVA Card Holders: All skin checks and skin cancer-related procedures (including consultations, biopsies, excisions, cryotherapy, curettage, and other treatments) are bulk-billed with no out-of-pocket cost (subject to DVA eligibility).
- Pensioners : Bulk billing for skin checks and procedures is available with Dr Sam Hashem (please confirm at booking or mention your concession status).
If you hold a Gold DVA card or are a pensioner, please let our staff know when booking so we can confirm eligibility and arrange accordingly. Private fees apply to purely cosmetic treatments, as these do not attract a Medicare rebate. For any questions about your specific situation, call us on (07) 3352 3827.
Cancellation Policy
A missed appointment is a loss to three people: the client who missed the valuable time, another client who could have used the valuable time and the doctor who was fully staffed and prepared for the treatment. Please be considerate of others and provide at least 24 hours notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment.
To be able to offer affordable service to every one of our clients we have to protect our appointment availability via the following cancellation policy:
– We require a minimum of 24 hour notice for any appointment cancellation to allow time to reallocate your appointment to another client.
– If you cancel within 24 hours of your appointment for your procedure (PDT, biopsy or surgery), we reserve the right to charge a cancellation fee of 50% of the treatment cost.
– If you cancel your subsequent appointments without 24 hour notice, or don’t show up for your appointment, a cancellation fee / “no-show” fee of $50 will apply.
Payment Methods & Card Surcharges
We accept a range of payment methods, including EFTPOS, credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners, UnionPay, JCB), and cash (where applicable). All card payments are processed securely via Tyro for instant Medicare rebates where eligible.
To cover our processing costs, we apply a surcharge on certain card payments. These surcharges are set in line with Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) rules: they do not exceed our actual cost of acceptance for each payment type and are regularly reviewed.
| Payment Type | Surcharge |
|---|---|
| Mastercard Credit, Visa Credit, Amex/JCB, Diners, UnionPay Credit | 1.5% |
| Mastercard Debit, Visa Debit, EFTPOS, UnionPay Debit | 0.5% |
Important Notes
- Surcharges are only applied when you choose to pay by card and are calculated on the total amount payable.
- We display or advise surcharges clearly at the time of payment (on receipts, signage, and verbally if requested).
- Debit cards (including EFTPOS) often attract lower or no surcharge in practice due to lower costs — we aim to keep rates reasonable.
- Upcoming Changes: The Australian Government and Reserve Bank of Australia are reviewing card surcharges, with potential bans or reductions on debit/credit card surcharges proposed from 2026 onward. We will update our policy if changes affect our rates.
- If you prefer to avoid a surcharge, cash or other non-card options may be available for eligible payments.
For questions about payments, surcharges, or to discuss options, call us on (07) 3352 3827 or email info@qskin.com.au.

Medicare Rebates & Instant Processing via Tyro
We use Tyro (a secure Australian payment and claiming system) to make Medicare rebates fast and convenient for our patients.
- Patient Claims (Private Billing ): After you pay the full private fee (consultation or procedure), we submit your Medicare claim instantly via Tyro Easyclaim. If you use an eligible EFTPOS-linked debit/savings card (most Australian debit cards qualify), your Medicare rebate is deposited directly into your bank account almost immediately (usually within seconds, once approved). This means you get your rebate on the spot without waiting days or weeks for a Medicare cheque or direct deposit.
- How It Works in Practice:
- Pay your account (card, cash, etc.).
- We process the Medicare claim through Tyro at the terminal or digitally.
- For patient claims: Swipe/insert/tap your EFTPOS-enabled debit card — rebate appears in your account right away (if approved).
- We provide a receipt and Medicare claim summary for your records.
This system reduces paperwork and waiting time, ensuring a smoother experience. Rebates depend on Medicare eligibility, item numbers, and approval — your doctor will confirm details during your consult.
For any questions about claiming or eligibility, call us on (07) 3352 3827 or email info@qskin.com.au.
